The Atrium is a large new commercial development in the heart of Camberley town centre.
The Atrium - which derives its name from the light, glass focal space at the centre of the development - will offer 217 design-led and well-priced apartments. The 17 new shops will face directly onto Park Street, opposite Main Square. By providing units that are larger than those on offer in the town already, the scheme will bring more retailers into the town, extending the choice available to shoppers and attracting more people back into Camberley. Park Street itself will be rejuvinated, with new paving, benches and trees. The atrium area will be family-orientated and there will be no dedicated pubs or bars.
As part of the development Artpoint is working with Surrey Heath Borough Council and an established steering group to appoint and develop public art in the locality. Two sites have been identified; the first is the junction between the existing shopping centre and Park Street, creating a focal point/meeting place in the town (phase one). The second site is on the A30 where herald features will be created (phase two).
Artpoint and the steering group began phase one in March 2007. From a longlist of eleven artists four were invited to interview to present their working practice and ideas for the area. All artists presented widely different ideas and skills to the steering group, and after much discussion the artist Rick Kirby was selected for the project. Rick is bringing his own innovative style of sculpture to Camberley, designing a feature that will be the focal point of the development.
Rick’s proposal was to echo the legend of Camberley’s 18th century 100-foot obelisk in creating three figures atop a steel shaft guiding passers by with hands gesturing along three routes; Park Street North and South and Obelisk Way. The piece will be fabricated in a mosaic of welded stainless steel pieces which Rick attaches by hand. This aspirational sculpture will be an originally designed, site specific work. |
