Artpoint and Historical Royal Palaces(02/11/2009)

Artpoint has been appointed by Historic Royal Palaces the independent charity which manages some of the country’s grandest unoccupied palaces including Hampton Court which is one of only two surviving palaces originally owned by Henry VIII.

In April 2009, Historic Royal Palaces launched an ambitious new programme of interpretation at Hampton Court Palace to mark the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII’s accession to the throne. A major aspiration for this programme is to restore the magnificence of the Tudor courtyard Base Court and establish it as the hub for the palace - a place for performance, live interpretation and visitor orientation.

Artpoint’s role within this wider scheme is to explore the creative possibilities for developing artistic interventions to introduce into Base Court to achieve the project aims.

Artpoint has been commissioned by HRP to explore how an installation can work to tell stories in Base Court, engendering emotional responses and creating different types of social atmosphere or learning environments.

The project involves working with a variety of specialists from a range of backgrounds including artists, designers, historians, conservators and fabricators. The outcome of the project will be the development of a suite of feasible artistic proposals for Base Court, backed up by thorough research, strong visuals and realistic costings. Proposals will be assessed by members of Artpoint and the HRP Project Team.
